Where There is No Vision...
A strategic review of the Racing Industry was recently (February 11th) held. This was organized by the promoting company, Caymanas Track Ltd.  All stakeholders participated. Notably absent were the Bookmakers who are an integral part of the industry but somehow seemed to be excluded from these sorts of discussions. The presentations were informative especially that from the Racing Commission.

Naming of Horses
The naming of horses can be a fascinating exercise. Names have to be approved by the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) who is in turn guided by the Jockey Club of North America. This 105 year old organisation holds the  reins to the Sport of Kings in North America Our own Jockey Club had similar responsibilities but all of these responsibilities passed to the JRC and our Jockey Club is no longer a functional organisation.

Richard Azan's Vonalmighty created a mild upset in The Ash Wednesday Trophy over 6 1/2 furlongs on February 17, 2010. Hot apprentice Doushane Gordon who had the leg up, was closing a 3-timer on the 10-race card as he brought Vonalmighty with a strong stretch run to catch the speedy The Chief.

A time for hope and dreams
It’s the time of year again, when the yearlings are taken from the luxuries and enjoyment of farm life, from the fresh air and the whistling of the wind through the trees, from the companionship of their peers with whom they have developed friendships, from the persons who have nurtured them in their early lives, to the place where they are developed into mature individuals, into true racing horses, into champions. They are taken into the racetrack.
