Sir Valiant grabs Royal Lancaster

(Caymanas Park) Sat. Nov. 15, 2008.

Sir Valiant under a bustling ride from Panamanian rider Ameth Robles came storming home to snatch victory in the Royal Lancaster Trophy over the 1000 metres round course at Caymanas Park.
Named in honour of the champion two-year-old of 1985 who went unbeaten from six career starts as a juvenile, the field attractive eight runners including the 6-5 favourite Classical Bullet with Dane Nelson astride.
Trailing as the scarcely fancied fleet footed debutant Fee Fi Foe (Kenyatta Davis up) led at a fast clip passing the half-mile, Sir Valiant made steady progress to enter the stretch drive in sixth spot and produced a strong stretch run along the rail to get up in the final stride to nab the longtime leader at the wire.
The winning margin was a mere head with the third horse Meelo, partnered by Shane Ellis, staying on in third a further 1 1/4L away after chasing in second from some way out.
A two-year-old bay colt by Vanadium out of the 1993 Horse-of-the-Year Vestia by Exotic Traveller, the smallish Sir Valiant covered the trip in 1:01.0 and is conditioned by Gresford Smith and co-owned by Anthony Richards and Vaughn Smith.

Meanwhile Zunzun (2-1) under a splendid ride from another Panamanian invader in Dick Cardenas stuck well to her guns to stave off the howling 4-5 favourite spaceman in the hands of Dane Nelson.
Zunzun actually led from the gate and trudged off a feeble challenge from Littlerichboy passing the half-mile and had no sooner done so than Spaceman made a sharp move in a bid to assume the lead as they swung into the stretchdrive.
Still, Zunzun, who was always moving well, fought gamely up the lane and in an admirable display in the saddle Cardenas powered home the Philip Feanny trained filly by a head.
Brave in defeat Spaceman was a further 9 3/4L ahead of Piccolo with Trevor Simpson aboard.
The three-year-old bay daughter of Alisios out of Hya by The Medic stopped the clock at 1:39 1/5 seconds and sported the silks of Joseph Duany.

The riding honours belonged to Clive Lynch after booting home Flava Machine (8-5) for trainer Desmond Shand and Full Spectrum for trainer Patrick Chang in the opener and the fourth event respectively on a day the 70-1 shot Princess Zanai ensured a Super-Six carryover of $859,299 to this Wednesday's racemeet.
Princess Zanai was ridden by Devon A. Thomas for trainer Louis A. Richards who doubles as owner in combination with Paulette Bonnick.
