Medical Report in a thriller
(Caymanas Park) Sat. Sep. 27, 2008.
The Paul Francis ridden Medical Report stuck well to his guns to win the 1000 metres (straight) Reggae Trophy at Caymanas Park.
Offering odds of 3-1 in the five-horse field including the public's choice Bullet Train (Omar Walker up), Medical Report raced close up with leaders to the last furlong where he was engaged in a keen battle for supremacy among Nasatol and Mucho Gusto.
Travelling smoothly under a rhythmical hand ride Medical Report responded well (between horses) and won by a mere head to the good over Mucho Gusto with Brian Harding astride while a game Nasatol partnered by Dane Nelson going under by a further 1/2 length.
Sporting the silks of Cleveland A. Mitchell and conditioned by veteran Noel Ennevor the seven-year-old bay gelding by The Medic out of the Let's Get Physical mare Princess Ellen covered the trip in 58 1/5 seconds.
"Your Medical Report, Mr. Ennevor, lost only twice from eight starts this season, what's your next move with this success story?"
Ennevor's reply was one for the skeptics as he cautioned: "His main objective was always to contest the Caribbean Sprint Championship on 'Superstakes Day' but as things now stand this can only be realized if he can be readied enough 'cause he came back real sore as you can see."
Meanwhile celebrated filly Alsafra made short work of her three opponents as she preps for the November 8 Superstakes.
Alsafra, who became the second filly to have won the Triple Crown series of races in the annals of local racing, bids not only to become the first Triple Crown winning filly to be victorious in the coveted Superstakes but would be the first since The Viceroy in 1989.
Alsafra actually took command leaving the half-mile in the hands of customary pilot Brian Harding, who flew in from his base in Trinidad specifically for the ride, and glided the rest of the 1500 metres trip to stop the clock at 1:30 4/5 seconds behind a rich 1200 metres split of 1:10 3/5 seconds.
And it was variety for eye-catching performances as the well-heralded juvenile Bruceontheloose with former five-time champion Winston "Fanna" Griffiths in the irons spread-eagled rivals in the secondary feature The Stewards Cup.
The imported in utero grey colt owned by Tres Amigos and trained by Philip Feanny zipped the 1000 metres (round) trip in 1:00 2/5 second and this well conformed progeny of Wheelaway out of the former Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Lit De Justice mare Road To Justice looks a classy sort in the making.
Francis rode another winner in Simple Sweet for trainer Everald Francis earlier to share the day's riding honours as Richard Mitchell followed suit having booted home the Morris Powell trained Regal Selection in the fourth event before his victory with She's Royal for trainer Desmond Shand in tandem.
